Shops open early but Black Friday gets off to a slow start

Tesco has been keeping us in suspense as to what products they will be selling during their Black Friday sales, although we pretty much know what to expect.

The Boots flagship store on Sedley Place was one of a handful of shops which opened extra early, advertising deals on huge posters by the shop entrance.

Amazon is offering more than 7,000 deals over the course of a week, while Dixons Carphone is offering over 3,000 deals over 10 days.

Argos kicked off Black Friday a week ahead of time, with discounts on Star Wars, Peppa Pig and Disney Frozen toys.

While that particular affordable TV is out of stock, there are plenty of Black Friday TV deals in stock and we have them right here today.

Tesco will be closing all 250 Extra stores, which are usually open 24 hours a day, between midnight and 5am on Black Friday “to ensure colleagues have enough time to set up for the event this year”. But this year, many retailers have jumped the gun and advertised offers in advance.

Jon Copestake, of the Economist Intelligence Unit, told the Daily Telegraph: “What we are starting to see is Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Super Saturday all roll into one in a sales season that lasts several weeks in the run-up to Christmas”. This will be a constantly updating list of some of the best Black Friday deals going on at different retailers.

Black Friday is big business in Britain, and the Center for Retail Research estimates that online spending alone on Friday will reach 966 million pounds, or $1.46 billion. The company said it would not participate in Black Friday this year.

He added: “This year, these dates are Friday November 27 and Monday November 30, but any day is a day to be careful online”. They use various tactics to encourage us to take up their deals. All the Argos tech deals are here.

The British media has credited Amazon, the e-commerce juggernaut, with first importing Black Friday in 2010 when it started to offer Black Friday discounts, spurring other retailers to follow suit.

Currys PC World was one of the retailers to enjoy a great start to the trading day, managing to sell EIGHT items per second at one stage with 2,100 per cent website growth.

He said: “Above all, remember: if you don’t want something, don’t need it or can’t afford it, then don’t buy it”.

Previous year saw scuffles over bargains – scenes that are common in the United States, where the marketing tradition began, where customers queue hours before opening times to get first pick of the deals.
