Shoreham air crash: Memorial service held

“This is an enormously traumatic incident”, he said.

It is not yet clear who the pilot was on that day.

“Emergency services have declared a major incident and a number of helicopters have been deployed to the scene to evacuate casualties to hospital”, said Sussex Police.

Police have appealed for members of the public to stay away from the site while they continue their search.

Bishop Mark broke his annual leave to offer his support and prayers, and said: “The tragedy of Saturday’s air crash has touched the entire county and country”.

Police said the 51-year-old is “critically ill and fighting for his life”.

“Some of this material could be very distressing for the families and loved ones of the victims, so we are asking for anyone with footage to please consider their thoughts and feelings before posting”, the statement said.

Matt Jones, 24, and Matthew Grimstone, 23, a soccer player for the Worthing United team, were the first confirmed deaths.

However, three of the victims were named locally as Matt Jones, Matt Grimsone and Jacob Schilt.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror, Rebecca Asekaran said: “My thoughts are with the families and we want to know how the driver is. We have only just joined but they are such nice guys down there”.

The Mirror reports the headline “I can’t believe I escaped this”, telling the story of a hero dad, Terry Smith, 50, who bundled his eight-year-old daughter to safety before helping others affected.

Fourteen people sustained minor injuries, four of whom were taken to hospital.

The Hawker Hunter fighter jet, which was participating in the Shoreham Airshow near Brighton in southern England, hit several vehicles on a nearby road as it crashed on Saturday afternoon.

The pilot, Andy Hill, was a former RAF pilot and British Airways captain and was described as the “best of the best” by another pilot who flew at the airshow before the crash.

It wasn’t immediately clear if there were more injured people.

All those killed were on the road at the time of the crash, police said.
