A man was throwing rocks at his ex-girlfriend’s auto outside the baggage claim area after she tried to drop him off at the airport, Dallas Police Chief David Brown said in a news conference. Diamond got up with rocks still in his hand and ran at the officer a second time forcing the officer to shoot him again. Although there is no official confirmation, witnesses reported to numerous local news outlets they heard gunshots.
According to Randall Blakenbaker, assistant police chief of the Dallas Police Department’s Special Investigation Unit, the Friday incident began as an argument between Diamond and the woman. He hit her, pulled out his suitcase from the vehicle, then grabbed a traffic cone which he smashed into the auto windshield. The suspect was taken to the hospital alive, but police were not able to provide an update on his condition.
“During the shooting, we believe there were some folks in the security line who were startled, and so they went through the security line without being checked”, he said, “So the airport made a decision to pull everybody back out of the secure area and recheck them for security purposes”. Another officer is seen on the video brandishing a stun gun but apparently never fired it.
Bags sit in the baggage claim area, which was shut down due to an officer involved shooting at Dallas Love Field airport on Friday, June 10, 2016, in Dallas.
The incident occurred near a baggage claim area at street level. Blankenbaker says the man rushed the officer at least twice, and that the officer eventually fired his weapon. Shouts of “come down” were heard and a policeman with a handgun could be seen.
Police shot the man when he did not comply, Armstrong said.
Milcah Baraona flew in Saturday morning from Chicago Midway and said she almost cancelled her flight when the situation was unfolding.
The incident at the airport started after the pair pulled up to the curb outside the baggage claim doors around noon. “I didn’t know where the bullets were going”.
Beattie said this is the first shooting in the 89-year history of Love Field, located a few miles from downtown.
