Showtime Eyeing Stephen Colbert-Led, ‘Unfettered’ Live Election Night Special

Beyond the Colbert “half-announcement”, Nevins said, Showtime is “the clear No. 2” premium cable service in subscribers (both cable/satellite and digital) and profitability.

“I think it’s going to happen”, Nevins said.

Don’t pencil in anything for your upcoming night off, Stephen Colbert: Showtime’s got plans for you.

“Stephen wants to do it, I want to do it”, he said.

Colbert is available that night because The Late Show with Stephen Colbert (which airs on CBS, which like Showtime is owned by CBS Corp.) will not air on November 8, Nevins said.

Showtime chief David Nevins said Thursday that he’s in talks about a probable election-night special with the CBS late-night host, whose regular Late Show gig will be pre-empted November 8 by the network’s election coverage.

Following suggestions that James Corden and his “Carpool Karaoke” – thanks to its ongoing viral content – would be better suited for the slot, Colbert’s convention coverage offered fans it’s most viral moments yet with the return of Colbert’s Comedy Central persona and his partner in crime Jon Stewart, who delivered a scathing rant on the hypocrisy surrounding the “Blue lives matter” rhetoric echoing through the RNC.

Colbert’s live Late Show broadcasts during the recent Republican and Democratic National Conventions earned stronger ratings and generated buzz for the franchise that’s struggling to goose its ratings.

The concept: “Colbert unfettered”, Nevins continued, adding, “He’s promised he will say a couple of curse words”.

“The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” will air live on CBS after the scheduled September 26 and October 19 debates between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump and following the Tim Kaine-Mike Pence debate October 4, the network said Wednesday. “We want to have stuff we feel is culturally relevant”.

“‘The Circus’ has way more impact than we expected”, Nevins said. Please see our terms of service for more information.
