Those who had called for the bandh have said, a series of protests, including “road and rail roko”, will be held.

Police stated that no attempt to disrupt public peace or prevent the free movement of transportation would be tolerated.

Several local grocery shops, which usually open by daybreak, remained shut in view of the protests. However, the State transport corporation-run buses, besides trains were being operated as usual.

The Supreme Court has directed Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to ensure there is no violence, destruction of property in both states following its order on Cauvery water sharing.

“As I finally left Coimbatore for Bengaluru, I was stopped by Tamil Nadu police personnel who warned that they could not guarantee safety to my vehicle because of the Karnataka number plate”, the executive told IANS asking not to be named.

Commercial firms, including over 35,000 jewellery and fuel outlets are expected to remain closed.

The Cauvery river, which flows through southern Karnataka and then into Tamil Nadu, has been a point of conflict for decades.

According to him, their complaint before the court claimed that such alleged hate speeches were the root cause of the violence that left Tamils trembling as they and their belongings were attacked and ransacked by Kannada activities.

Most schools and colleges, however, declared a holiday for either Onam festival or as a precaution.

The dawn to dusk bandh is already in place and has significantly hit normal life. As per reports by police, more than 85 per cent shops remain closed in Tirunelveli district.

Meanwhile, in Karnataka, situation has returned to normalcy in the entire state.

The apex court had modified its September 5 order and asked Karnataka to release 12,000 cusecs of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu till September 20.

He hoped that the water would be available in Karaikal in the next couple of days.

Noting that the Cauvery River Water Dispute Tribunal has made a provision for the riparian states to find a solution to any problem through understanding and consensus, he said in a federal set-up, it was the duty of the central government and the Prime Minister to convene a meeting of chief ministers to resolve inter-state issues, as some PMs did in the past.
