Shuttlers Jwala-Ashwini pair loses Olympic opener to Japan

Rio de Janeiro: London Games bronze victor Saina Nehwal and two-time World Championship bronze medallist, P V Sindhu made a resounding start to their badminton campaign at the Rio Olympics but it turned out to be a dismal day for the Indian doubles players, here on Thursday. The Japanese pair were even more dominant in the second game, which lasted 16 minutes. They lost the first game 21-15 and 21-10 in the second set.

Rio de Janeiro, Aug 11: India’s Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa were off to a losing start in the women’s doubles category in badminton at the Rio Olympics 2016 here today (August 11). The second game was completed in 17 minutes.

Jwala and Ashwini’s next match is against Eefje Muskens and Selena Piek (Netherlands) at 5.30pm (IST) on Friday.

The opening saw the Indian pairing begin on a positive note, but the Japanese pair were quick to assume control of proceedings as with a combination of smashes and fine net play, they took full advantage of proceedings, leading 11-8 in the interval.

On the other hand, Manu Attri and B Sumeeth Reddy will compete in the men’s doubles event shortly.
