Si Woo Kim shoots Wyndham-record 10-under 60 to take lead

They missed chances to become the second player this month to break 60 on the PGA Tour.

After an aggressive drive ended in a “tough lie” in the left rough, Kim’s approach from 112 yards ended 50 feet beyond the pin and his hopes of holing the putt appeared slim. Furyk shot the first 58 in tour history August 7 in the final round of the Travelers Championship.

Kim, who stands 43rd on the FedEx Cup standings, almost shot 59 on Friday.

Kim eagled the par-5 5 after hitting his drive nearly 350 yards (320 metres) and his approach to 10 feet. He made the last of his 10 birdies on the par-4 eighth, holing another 10-footer.

Beginning on the back nine, Kim birdied three of his opening four holes and followed a seven-foot gain at the 15th with a close-range two at the next.

Kim’s round in ideal morning conditions lifted him into the clubhouse lead on 12-under 128, with first-round leaders Rafa Cabrera-Bello and Kevin Na among the late starters. Glover also missed a chance for 59 — and 60 — when he closed with a bogey on the par-4 18th.

“Not so much celebrate today”, Kim said.

Furyk had a 64, birdieing four in a row on Nos.

“Five weeks of playing”.

“I was a little golfed out and needed some family time”, he said. “He’s doing better, so here we are”. “(But) I’m thrilled the way I putted”, he said. “Keep attacking those flags and we’ll see”.

“I felt I played good for the majority of the round, just the putts didn’t want to drop in”, said Cabrera Bello, fifth last week in the Rio Olympics. He won the 2013 event for his first tour title. He is now 43rd in the FedEx Cup standings. It also is the next-to-last chance to earn points for the Ryder Cup, which begins September 30. Love will make his first three captain’s picks September 11 after the BMW Championship.

Glover only recorded one bogey in his second round, and having come at the final hole it will have left something of a sour taste in his mouth.

EUROPEAN PGA: In Vysoky Ujezd, Czech Republic, Jeff Winther had an eagle on his way to a 6-under 66 and a share of the second round lead with defending champion Thomas Pieters of Belgium at the Czech Masters.
