Sia’s Cheap Thrills ends Drake’s number one run in US
“Cheap Thrills”, as was first reported when the song was released late previous year, was originally meant for Rihanna.

The song, featuring an assist from Sean Paul (his first No. 1 in over a decade – the Sean Paul revival is real!), successfully ousted Drake after his 10-week No. 1 “One Dance” reign on the Billboard Hot 100 charts this week, according to the official chart company today (July 25).
“Cheap Thrills” is not the first song that got Sia in the limelight though.
Sia kept listening to the track’s gentle rumble and fun-on-a-budget lyrics – an anomaly for someone who’s written scores of songs for artists, not to mention those she kept for herself. Also, as a singer-songwriter, Sia is known for her track “Chandelier”, which became Sia’s signature song that brought her to the top 10 in the music charts. This marks the Australian singer’s first stint at #1 in the United States as a lead artist, but not her first time having a hand in a chart-topping single.
“Her manager said “We want Diamonds”. Now, “Cheap Thrills” is giving Sia another great record and probably another Grammy nomination.
“I realized just as soon as I was cutting it that it sounded a little bit too Brit-pop for her. It’s more Icona Pop. We did actually send it to her, but they passed on it, and then I just couldn’t stop listening to it in the auto”, Sia told Rolling Stone last December.

Noted by Howl and Echoes, the writer of Rihanna’s 2012 “Diamonds” is also the first female, over the age of 40, to hit a No. 1 chart topper since Madonna in 2000. To celebrate this feat, Sia shared her excitement with her fans by leaving a post in her Twitter account.
