Up first on Saturday night will be Trevor Siemian.

And Kubiak said it’s possible he would name a starting quarterback for the September 8 regular-season opener next week, leading into the Broncos’ third preseason game – August 27 against the Los Angeles Rams.

Siemian, a second-year player, is battling veteran Mark Sanchez for the starting spot to begin the regular season. He and offseason acquisition Mark Sanchez have been splitting first-team reps during camp. Siemian was 7-of-12 for 88 yards.

Kubiak said Siemian will play the entire first quarter and about half of the second quarter before giving way to Sanchez.

Does this finally prove that it’s truly an open and even competition? “They should both play with the ones some how some way this week, I would think”. “We’ll see, we’ll see”. “I just watch their decision-making process and those type of things”. “But I’m looking at a lot”.

The competition could – or should – be solved by the all-important third preseason game. But he refused to set a timetable on his decision or rush the evaluation process that is nearly five months in the making. “Yeah. Will I? I don’t know”, Kubiak said, smiling.

Sanchez, who started Denver’s preseason debut, went 10-of-13 for 99 yards, a touchdown and an interception.
