‘Signaller did not receive call’ before train hit car at level crossing

The man, aged in his 40s, was airlifted to hospital after the collision on the line between Cambridge and Ely on Friday afternoon.

The level crossing between Ely and Waterbeach in Cambridgeshire is used by fewer than 10 vehicles each day, Network Rail said, and is “user-worked”.

The East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust was called at 2.34pm, and sent an ambulance, three ambulance officers, the East Anglian Air Ambulance and its hazardous area response team to the scene.

National Rail is reporting major delays to the east coast main line, which are expected to be disrupted until 7pm.

Trains between Lynn and Cambridge may be cancelled, amended or delayed by up to 60 minutes.

A major incident has been declared after a train smashed into a auto on the line between Cambridge and Ely this afternoon. “Disruption is expected to continue until 7pm”.

A passenger on the train told The Sun it had been “badly hit” by the auto and while everyone on board was “calm and ok”, rail staff were being given “additional support”. Everyone in train is ok. “An air ambulance just arrived on the scene”.
