Simone Manuel won a gold medal in the 100-meter freestyle in Rio yesterday, making her the first African-American woman to win an individual medal in Olympic swimming.

The tweet has since been deleted, and the story, which is here, includes an editor’s note: “The original headline on this story was insensitive and has been updated to acknowledge the historic gold medal wins by both Simone Manuel and Michael Phelps”.
“That’s not true because I work just as hard as anyone else and I love the sport and I want to win just like everybody else”. “And I just want to be inspiration to others that you can do it”.
Manuel, who won a silver medal in the 4×100 freestyle relay Sunday night, was scheduled to swim in the semifinals of the 50 freestyle Friday night. Her achievements and accomplishments are inspiring kids across the country.
Manuel said that her victory was extra special in the context of ongoing race issues in the U.S. In a CNN interview, she discussed her reasons for attending Stanford.
Manuel and Oleksiak shared the top spot on the medal podium, with the US anthem played first followed by the Canadian anthem. “I mean, I didn’t have that many people to look up to when I was younger so hopefully it inspires other African Americans to get involved in the sport”.
Delicate new hardware such as two Olympic gold medals requires top-notch storage to protect the precious cargo from getting scratched.
Kennedy said nationally, 70 percent of African American children don’t learn how to swim, but he expects that will change after Rio. And he couldn’t be more thrilled with how Manuel has handled what she termed the “weight” of the African-American community.
She stuck with swimming while her brother played basketball.
Here’s one future Olympian that’s definitely psyched about Manuel’s win. On her Twitter page, a letter that says, “All Glory to God!”
It’s a long way from Copacabana Beach to the shores of West Seattle, but you can still see the Olympics and talk about them, too. “Just being a black woman myself and to see just someone like me, like the color, is just so awesome and for her to get an Olympic record is better still”.
