Sindhu storms into Malaysia Masters final

Jan 24 Leading Indian shuttler P.V. Sindhu won the women’s singles title of the $120,000 Malaysia Masters Grand Prix Gold with a straight games victory over Kirsty Gilmour of Scotland in the final on Sunday.

It was Sindhu’s fifth Grand Prix Gold event title.

Sindhu ended 2015 by winning the Macau Open Grand Prix Gold and she commences 2016 by winning the Malaysia Masters Grand Prix.

Though the Scottish World No. 20 gave a good fight to the 20-year-old Indian, Sindhu managed to go in the lead at the start of the first game.

National No 1 Chong Wei had no trouble at all as he eased past Indonesia’s Tommy Sugiarto with a 21-19, 21-15 win at the SPICE Arena.

The two rivals had a 2-2 head-to-head record before today’s meeting and they opened the first set neck-and-neck till they tied at 11-all.

India’s top male player and world number 9 Kidambi Srikanth suffered a shock semifinal defeat at the hands of world number 51 Iskandar Zulkarnain.

Sindhu had earlier stormed into the final with an upset win in the semi-finals against Korean Ji Hyun Sung 21-19 12-21 21-10.
