Singapore major partner in India’s transformation

Tomorrow morning, Mr Modi will receive a ceremonial welcome by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the Istana, following which the Indian premier will call on President Tony Tan Keng Yam, before meeting Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong.

Modi said “I am particularly grateful to you for our security cooperation”, at a joint press conference with his Malaysian counterpart Najib Razak after bilateral talks between the two sides.

“India and Singapore elevate their bilateral relations to a strategic partnership to deepen and broaden engagement in existing areas of cooperation and catalyse new ones ranging from political, defence and security cooperation to economic, cultural and people-to-people contact”.

“Prime Minister also said that Singapore can contribute a lot in urban development in India”.

Modi said his government was prepared to work with the Malaysian government to build a memorial to Indian soldiers who laid down their lives in Malaysia during World War II.

After signing MoUs on cyber security, culture and public administration, Modi expressed confidence of taking the bilateral trade and investment relations to a new level.

While praising the “energy, sense of goal and enterprise in the Singapore air”, he said, “Singapore is a major partner in nearly every area of India’s transformation”.

During his two-day visit, Modi delivered a speech at the 37th Singapore Lecture and visited Little India with Lee and his wife on Monday.

The Indian prime minister also said he was keen to raise India’s participation in Malaysia’s economy.

The Torana Gate is a gift from India to the people of Malaysia as a mark of continued friendship between both countries.

“I am positive ties between India and Malaysia can be stronger and deeper within the occasions to return”, he stated. Mr Modi told about 500 business delegates that over the past 18 months his government has been successful in restoring the credibility of India in the eyes of global players.

He also said that the agreement to cooperate in cyber-security between the two countries was very important.

Modi is scheduled to arrive in India on Tuesday night.
