Singapore on battle mode against Zika after infections rise

Florida has found the Zika virus in three groups of mosquitoes trapped in Miami Beach – the first time this has happened in the continental US – and authorities are blaming a particular flower for making mosquito control much more hard. Eighty pregnant women in the state have been infected with Zika.
If an infected person arrives in an unaffected country, Zika can spread if a local mosquito feeds on that individual, picks up the virus, and transfers it to another human with its next blood meal. The virus in the Americas is an Asian strain that was responsible for a large outbreak in French Polynesia and other Pacific Islands in 2013 and 2014.
In a study published online Thursday in the journal Lancet Infectious Diseases, the researchers suggest India, China, the Philippines, Indonesia, Nigeria, Vietnam, Pakistan, and Bangladesh may be at the greatest risk of local outbreaks of Zika, which has become endemic in most of South America, Central America and the Caribbean.
Ben Neuman, a virology professor at the University of Reading, said that once the virus has started to spread by mosquitoes locally, and not just by travelers, it can become entrenched in animals as well as people and be extremely hard to eradicate. “Twenty-six of these are females, and here’s the good thing – none of the females are pregnant”.
A hurricane or tropical storm hitting Florida may worsen the Zika virus outbreak, U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan warned in a letter Thursday urging congressional leaders to take immediate action on more federal funding to combat the disease, which can cause severe birth defects.
Zika virus was identified of responsible to stimulate microcephaly abnormality for the born babies.
The Zika developments come as Congress prepares to return next week. The development of protective herd immunity at a young age would also protect pregnant women against fetal complications. “It’s past time to get this done”.
According to the CDC, Zika can be transmitted in several different ways. CDC officials say they’re almost out of money for their Zika efforts.
The Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) will deploy the mechanism now used to fight dengue to prevent the spread of the Zika virus.
“There’s no time for politics. It will find its way somehow to breed”, said Gimenez. On Thursday, The Ministry of Health and National Environment Agency confirmed 31 more locally transmitted cases, bringing the total count to 151, including two pregnant women.
Those who have traveled to such places, or who have had unprotected sex with a traveler to those locals, should wait two months before trying to conceive.

Although some who contract the disease have no symptoms, the most common include fever, rash, joint pain and red eyes, according to the CDC.
