Singaporeans celebrate first Olympic gold medal

Phelps missed out on a 23rd Olympic gold medal by finishing in a three-way tie for second in the 100 metres butterfly, but has one final opportunity in the 4x100m medley relay on Saturday. “If he continues to meet those conditions, I don’t see why not”, Dr Ng told Channel NewsAsia.

The United States holds a narrow lead over China.

In rededicating himself to one last run at glory in 2016, Phelps vowed to do it the right way.

Two other members of the “Final Five” will attempt to add to their medal haul.

Phelps was beaten in his last Olympic individual race Friday night by a 21-year-old who grew up idolizing him.

In an interview with The Sporting News, 23-time gold medalist Michael Phelps said he was in disbelief as to what occurred to Ryan Lochte, Gunnar Bentz, Jack Conger and Jimmy Feigen, who were all robbed at gunpoint in a taxi cab upon leaving a nightclub early Sunday morning.

“I told him to go four more years and he said ‘No way'”. “I’ve been able to do everything I’ve ever put my mind to in the sport and after 24 years in the sport, I’m happy with how things finished”.

In the stands, his fiancee, Nicole Johnson, bounced along to the music with their son, 3-month-old Boomer, cradled in her arms.

For the first time in an Olympics, triplets will compete in an event.

On these calls, Dr Ng said: “I think we should take it a step at a time”.

“Four years ago with that first music video, he was in it for a split second and his face said, ‘I’ve got work to do.’ This time, he embraced it”.

Phelps touched second in 51.14 in the 100 fly, earning silver in the event he’d won each of the past three Olympics.

They clasped hands and stepped up together. They swam in different semifinal heats, with Schooling winning his and Phelps getting beat by Cseh in the other.

“He said “good job, that was a great race”, Schooling said.

“I’m sorry if I don’t seem like I’m full of emotions but I don’t know what to believe – that I actually did it or I’m still preparing for my race”.

Now, he’s the oldest swimmer of any nationality to win an individual gold medal.

“That’s pretty insane, what happens in eight years”, said Schooling, who attends the University of Texas.

“I didn’t want to feel like I was forced to do something”.

Phelps is a 22-time Olympic gold medalist, and he’s up to 26 overall medals in his career.

Most of the USA swim team was in the stands to watch Phelps’ finale, including the biggest female star at the pool, Katie Ledecky. Maya Dirado pipped Katinka Hosszu by six hundredths of a second in the women’s 200m backstroke final, denying the Hungarian her fourth gold. Bronze went to Canada’s Hilary Caldwell. Meyer took the 200, 400 and 800 at the 1968 Mexico Games, and Ledecky matched that performance with a couple of world records as well.

Then, Ledecky played the waiting game, hanging on the rope for a while to let the rest of the field finish.

He has won multiple NCAA championships, dominated competition at the Southeast Asian Games and Asian Games, won a silver medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and a bronze at the 2015 world championships.

Ledecky was barely breathing hard.

“The goal was 8:05 or better”, she said.

Simone Manuel, who became the first African-American woman to win a gold medal when she set an American and Olympic record in the 100 free on Thursday, is in the women’s 50 free finals Saturday.

Biles, 19, wowed the crowd earlier in the week, securing team gold for the USA with a near-flawless samba-themed performance on the floor that included a ideal execution of the gravity-defying “Biles flip”.

Turns out, it was swimming all along.

Oksana Chusovitina of Uzbekistan, competing in her record seventh Olympics, will also try to reach the podium.

She’s already got a job lined up in Atlanta after the Olympics and made it clear she would be retiring no matter the results.

At age 31, he leaves Rio with five golds and a silver.

“This whole day has been kind of insane because it’s all of these little last things that I’ve gotten to do, like my last warmup with the girls at the training pool”, DiRado said. “I had to think about what was going on and make sure I had a lane for (Friday’s butterfly final)”.
