Singer The Weeknd donates $250K to Black Lives Matter

According to reports, the Grammy award-winning crooner cemented his support of the Black Lives Matter movement by pledging $250,000 to the Black Lives Matter Network.

The money will go to the Black Lives Matter Network, which describes itself on its website as “a chapter-based national organization” now “working to (re) build the Black liberation movement”.

The hefty pledge comes a month after he took to Twitter following the police deaths of Philando Castile and Alton Sterling in July.

Lately One Sixth, ASAP Rocky and the ever-outspoken Killer Mike have also contributed to the discussion around police brutality, with The Game and Snoop Dogg also holding a forum between gangs in order to help foster harmony throughout the inner circles of the black community.

The singer’s parents are from Ethiopia, but raised him in Canada.

The tweet came following fatal officer-involved shootings of black men in Baton Rouge, Lousiana and suburban Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The Weekend won two Grammy awards a year ago for Best Urban Contemporary Album for Beauty Behind the Madness and Best R&B Performance for “Earned It.” he was also nominated for an Academy Award for “Earned It”, which appeared in 50 Shades of Grey.

The Weeknd also scored a hit in 2014 with Ariana Grande as they teamed up for the duet Love Me Harder that peaked at number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
