Sinkhole closure on London Bridge routes leaves commuters facing chaos

Rail passengers are braced for a night of travel chaos after the hole opened up in Forest Hill, south-east London, forcing the closure of two major rail lines.

Live travel updates are available on TfL and Southern Railway’s site – we’re afraid the latter doesn’t make for pleasant reading.

A Network Rail spokesman said “more than 50 tonnes of ballast” is on its way to the site to fill the hole.

Train services have been thrown into disarray at London Bridge this evening.

Southern and Thameslink passengers are being advised to avoid using London Bridge station and use either Victoria or Blackfriars stations on Monday evening instead.

He added: “Our aim is to have the railway fixed for tomorrow morning but holes like this can be unpredictable”.

-Those travelling from Uckfield can still catch their trains from London Bridge but some will be cancelled and trains that do run may be delayed.

Caterham and Tattenham corner services are being diverted between Norwood Junction and London Bridge.

But tickets are being accepted on London Underground services. Southern Rail now hit by a giant sinkhole.

London mayor Sadiq Khan has called for GTR to be stripped of the Southern franchise, whilst Campaign for Better Transport has said the government should intervene and rail minister Claire Perry has resigned after saying the issue felt “like a failure”.

All lines have now reopened but trains are running at a reduced speed between the stations.
