Sinkhole spanning four-lane road swallows van in Ottawa
“All hands are on deck to make sure the site is secured and no harm is done to any individual”, said Mayor Jim Watson, who confirmed that the Rideau Centre had been evacuated.

Hydro Ottawa is reporting that there is a power outage in the area caused by the sinkhole and crews are responding. “I’m proud of our emergency response”.
A huge sinkhole opened on a busy Ottawa street this morning due to a water main break.
However, a van was swallowed up by the sinkhole.
Twitter users were quick to humorously point blame for the sinkhole – images with Godzilla, a giant squirrel, and even a mountain of spaghetti and meatballs soon surfaced.
Questions swirled as to whether the cavernous hole in the pavement was linked to underground drilling for the city’s light rail transit system.
A major roadway in the nation’s capital is all but shut down after a enormous sinkhole opened up late Wednesday morning.

The city is working with other businesses to evacuate the area. In 2014, a 12-metre deep sinkhole opened up near Laurier Avenue and Waller Street. The area was already closed to traffic before the sinkhole opened up because of ongoing construction work.
