Six Notre Dame players face charges

Six Notre Dame football players were arrested in two separate incidents Friday night and early Saturday morning.

In addition to Redfield, LB Te’von Coney, RB Dexter Williams, CB Ashton White and WR Kevin Stepherson were also arrested.

All five were arrested and taken to the Fulton County Jail, where they were charged with possession of marijuana.

Police stopped the vehicle for going 73 miles per hour in a 60 miles per hour zone, according an Indiana State Police report. Redfield, Stephenson and Williams also face the handgun charge. The trooper detected the odor of marijuana and with the help of a drug-sniffing dog, he found the marijuana and handgun, police said.

“Any student arrested on a felony charge also faces dismissal from the university”, he said in an email. All five were taken to Fulton County Jail. Butler suffered a broken bone in his foot that kept him out of Notre Dame’s 44-28 Fiesta Bowl loss to Ohio State and then re-fractured the foot during the offseason. After officers broke up that fight, they went outside and saw several women fighting near the curb.

Officers had to use a stun gun to subdue Butler in the altercation outside the Linebacker Lounge in South Bend, according to a probable cause affidavit.

‘He shouted profanities at the officers and started swinging his fist, ‘ Galea said of Butler. He was charged with battery of a police officer and resisting a police officer after his arrest at a local nightclub.

Notre Dame is set to open up its 2016 season on September 4 against Texas.

Sophomore Williams is a part of ND’s projected three-man running back rotation.

Five of the players were arrested following a traffic stop in Fulton County around 10 p.m. Friday. The senior does have starting experience but was expected to compete for a backup position when he returned.

The fall semester of classes at ND begins Tuesday.
