The WHO’s Western Pacific Region Office in Manila said as long as Aedes mosquitoes circulated in the region “it can be anticipated that the virus will emerge”. The virus could be possibly linked to microcephaly, a birth defect in children that could be caused by a mother being infected with Zika.

The WHO said the virus could infect 4 million people by the end of the year.

It is being linked to severe birth defects.

The most common symptoms of Zika are fevers, rashes, joint pain and conjunctivitis.

The World Health Organization said Thursday that Zika is spreading fast and health officials have planned an emergency meeting for Monday.
