SKorea leader open for NKorea talks if nuclear progress made

Before the November 2 summit, the South Korean president had refused to meet one-on-one with the Japanese leader citing his distorted perception of history.

Seoul-Tokyo relations remain badly frayed largely because of Japan’s refusal to atone for its past wrongdoings stemming from its colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula from 1910 to 1945.

South Korea has urged Japanese leaders to issue a formal apology and offer compensation acceptable to the surviving women and the Korean people.

The interview came days before Yonhap News Agency is set to host the executive board meeting of the Organization of Asia-Pacific News Agencies.

There is no reason not to hold an inter-Korean summit if a breakthrough comes in solving the North Korean nuclear issue and progress is made in improving the South-North relationship.

“All of these combine to produce a threat not only to the ROK, but to Japan, the region and to the United States as well”, he said.

Park called on North Korea to faithfully implement what has been agreed upon and gradually build trust with South Korea.

Both Seoul and Washington have said any meaningful dialogue with Pyongyang would require North Korea to make a few tangible step towards denuclearisation – a pre-condition the North has repeatedly rejected.
