“Built from the ground up to bring Skylanders to life on mobile devices, Skylanders Battlecast combines physical card play with mobile gaming in an all-new way”, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg said.

Skylanders is coming to mobile and tablets in the form of a new card battling game.

It’s similar to games like Magic: The Gathering and Hearthstone, with some added flourishes that make Battlecast feel uniquely Skylanders.

The concept that might help Skylanders Battlecast apart from its competitors (and make Activision Blizzard even more money if it catches on) is that there will be physical cards for sale as well. Activision didn’t detail exactly how this feature works, but you can see a few, brief flashes of it in the trailer above.

The publisher promises both online PVP and a single-player campaign, and physical card packs will be sold at retail.

The Skylanders Battlecast story is a new adventure set within the Skylanders universe.

It’s also possible to scan two cards at once to stage a fully-animated battle sequence that lets players “physically interact with the characters”. Now Skylanders will be bringing that same idea to the card game genre.
