Skype has always been a solid business communications tool, and Microsoft has done a great job of beefing up the infrastructure and adding in solid collaboration features since purchasing the messaging solution in 2011.

The new Mojis will immediately make you think of GIFs – they basically serve the same goal – but they’re really very short videos created exclusively for the service from popular content.

The first batch of Mojis will features content from Jurassic Park, Bridesmaids, The Muppets, Despicable Me, Pitch flawless, and more.

Microsoft said today that it has teamed up with leading entertainment providers including Universal Studios, the BBC, The Muppets, and more, to find “the funniest, craziest and most iconic moments from some of the best TV and movies out there”. These “Mojis” can be located by tapping on the emoticon icon on the chat box.

It would be easier to just let users send animated GIFs to each other, but to do so would deny Microsoft and the studios that agreed to this feature a chance to advertise. The new Mojis are short animations from a variety of films and TV shows that you can insert into IM conversations. From there, you can purchase or rent the entire movie or television show.

Mojis are rolling out now to Skype for Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS.
