Skyrim, Fallout 4 Mods Support Cancelled On PS4
The version 4.00 update – codenamed Shingen – prepares the way for Sony’s two new versions of its PS4: a slimmer model coming this week, and the PS4 Pro, a more powerful version of the machine capable of playing games in 4K resolutions, due for release on November 10th. Sadly, it seems like it will no longer be happening.

It’s uncertain why Sony ultimately made a decision to oppose console mods but this is definitely a pretty heavy blow to all the gamers who were eagerly anticipating to get a taste of some additional content for Fallout 4 and the upcoming Skyrim Special Edition.
While Fallout 4 modding has been working well on Xbox One for months, Bethesda has apparently been butting heads with Sony on the subject for a while and now, mod support for PS4 has been canceled.
Bethesda’s ongoing discussions with Sony regarding PS4 mod support for Fallout 4 and Skyrim have stalled, casting the future of the initiative in doubt.
“We will provide an update if and when this situation changes”, Bethesda concludes.
The immediate assumption is that Sony was likely trying to enforce greater control on which mods would show up on its system than what Bethesda would like.
In an update on their website today, Bethesda said that Sony won’t allow Bethesda to enable user mods “the way they should work”. What was known at the time though is Sony’s console had file size limits.
Fallout 4 is immediately available. Presumably the Xbox will also support mods for the Skyrim remaster when that launches in October.
Although Sony has never stated officially what their problem is with mods, it’s believed to be a mixture of legal concerns and worries about quality assurance. That demonstrates just how much console players have been yearning for mod support with their games and why Sony may be missing out on a huge opportunity by blocking support for the PS4.

Bethesda talked about some of the issues with PS4 mods in a June 15th blog post. We’ll just have to wait and see what Sony has to say.
