Authorities allege Lewis shot and killed Kansas City, Kansas, police Capt. Robert Melton on Tuesday as 46-year-old Melton was still in his unmarked patrol vehicle, helping investigate an earlier drive-by shooting.
Hundreds of mourners have gathered for the funeral for a Kansas City, Kansas, police captain shot to death on duty.
Daqon Sipple is charged with aggravated assault, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, and criminal discharge of a weapon. A 20-year-old man, Jamaal Lewis, is charged with capital murder in Melton’s death.
“Nothing’s ever going to replace, you know, Melton to any of us”, officer Amber Thomas, a department spokeswoman, said Thursday after the news conference. He is not believed to have an attorney yet, a spokesman for Gorman’s office said.
When Sipple was taken into custody, the officer believed he still had a gun on him and caused the officer to fear for his life – which resulted in an aggravated assault of law enforcement charge, according to officials.
Police Chief Terry Zeigler said Wednesday that authorities were not seeking additional suspects, but that the investigation remained ongoing.
Melton was taken to the University of Kansas Hospital.
Lewis is being held on a $10 million bond, Sipple’s bond is $100,000 per jail records.
“This incident involved a suspect who committed a violent crime and then murdered an officer to avoid being caught”, Zeigler said. Police say they are not looking for any other suspects at this time.
