Slain man’s family asks America to ‘open their eyes’
The unarmed black man fatally shot by a white Tulsa, Oklahoma, police officer in an incident captured on video posed no imminent threat, lawyers for his family said yesterday, disputing an allegation the man was reaching into his vehicle.

Terence Crutcher, left, with his arms up is pursued by police officers as he walks next to his stalled vehicle moments before he was shot and killed by one of the officers in Tulsa, Oklahoma. “There’s not much that we can do [as black people] to stop the violence against us”.
In addition, both the US Department of Justice and state authorities have launched investigations into the officer-involved shooting.
‘Somebody left their vehicle running in the middle of the street with their doors wide open, ‘ the caller said. Then nearly immediately, someone can be heard yelling, “Shots fired!” and Crutcher is left lying in the street.
There was particular anger at a comment made by the pilot of the police helicopter moments before Crutcher was shot by Officer Shelby.
One thing is certain, the minutes leading up to Officer Shelby pointing her gun at Crutcher and ultimately shooting him are missing. “This is bigger than us right here”, she said at a press conference yesterday morning.
“He didn’t close the doors he comes on the scene when she’s at the auto”, said attorney David Riggs.
After the female officer shot Crutcher, video shows her crumbling to her knees and other officers surrounding her to console her.
Within seconds, Crutcher is apparently hit by the Taser and Shelby’s fatal shot. That bit bad dude was enrolled at Tulsa Community College, just wanting to make us proud. He said the police department and the residents have a positive relationship, but he knows one shooting could change all of that.
Betty Shelby’s mother-in-law, Lois Shelby, said the officer is grieving for Crutcher’s family and isn’t prejudiced.
Crutcher had no weapon on him or in his SUV, Tulsa Police Chief Chuck Jordan said Monday, Sept. 19, 2016. The case is the latest in a series of deaths across the country at the hands of the police that have raised questions about officers’ use of force, particularly against African-American men.
Danny C. Williams, US Attorney of the Northern District of Oklahoma, said prosecutors will attempt to determine whether a federal civil rights violation had occurred.
Attorney Scott Wood said Crutcher repeatedly failed to comply with Shelby’s commands and reached toward or into his pockets on several occasions despite Shelby’s orders not to do so.
A first-degree murder charge which can carry the death penalty in Oklahoma would seem highly unlikely, no matter what the investigation turns up, Berlin said. The four officers surround him, making it harder to see his actions from the police dashboard camera’s angle.

Shelby’s attorney is saying the shooting was justified because Crutcher was trying to reach into his auto and into his pockets, but not only does the window appear closed, it is likely he was only trying to reach for his identification. “But, you know, we have a family that goes out every day and faces life and death”.
