Thousands packed the Living Faith Christian Center in north Baton Rouge on Monday for the 2.5-hour service celebrating city police officer Jackson.
Shane Evans of the East Baton Rouge Parish coroner’s office says Gavin Long’s body was claimed by his mother, Corine Woodley, and released Monday morning to a Covington funeral home.
Just three days before his death, Jackson married with a four-month-old son named Mason wrote a Facebook post detailing how hard it was for him to be both a black man and a police officer, describing himself as “tired physically and emotionally”.
As Clinton pointed out in her recent speech, these are not just any guns but military-style weapons, such as the ones used to slaughter the five police officers in Dallas and the three officers in Baton Rouge. Another black man was shot and killed by police the next day in Minnesota, with his girlfriend livestreaming the aftermath on Facebook.
Although I called her to apologize for the union’s actions, I’m calling on the mayor and the chief of police to speak and denounce this behavior, a behavior that has caused the divide in our city in the past. Montrell Jackson’s unit kneels and touches his casket during his funeral service at the Living Faith Christian Center in Baton Rouge, La., Monday, July 25, 2016.
Gov. John Bel Edwards cited Jackson’s Facebook post as he described the officer as a man who loved his community and cared deeply about protecting it. “In uniform I get nasty hateful looks and out of uniform some consider me a threat”, Jackson wrote. He says the money was raised just in one day and they were completely humbled by the love and support from the community. Jacksons beaming smile was emblazoned on posters near his coffin and wall screens in the church.
“You loved this city”, Dabadie said.
“My heart goes out to all the victims”, Kincaid said. A multi-agency public memorial service for all three officers is planned for Thursday.
Authorities say Long stalked Baton Rouge police before ambushing a handful of them.
