Jackson, who recently celebrated his 10-year anniversary with Baton Rouge police, was married and the father of a 4-month-old son, Mason, according to The Advocate.
Documents show that gunman Gavin Eugene Long sought to change his name previous year to Cosmo Setepenra. A website using that name links to online books about nutrition, self-awareness and empowerment.
On one website, he described himself as a “Freedom Strategist, Mental Game Coach, Nutritionist, Author and Spiritual Advisor”. They added Long “ambushed” and “targeted” police officers. Long, who was black, was reported to be 29 years old. “That’s the only way a bully knows to quit”. Campus police don’t have any records of interactions with him during his time at the university, the spokesman said.
His July 5 death, followed by another police-involved shooting the same week in Minnesota, touched off demonstrations nationwide that have led to arrests and roadway closures.
Long attended classes at the University of Alabama for one semester in the spring of 2012.
Documents show that Long sought to change his name previous year to Cosmo Setepenra. He also refers to himself as a member of the Washitaw de Dugdahmoundyah, also known as the Washitaw Nation.
The name-change document ends: “Standing firm on the Ancient Principles of, LOVE, TRUTH, PEACE, FREEDOM AND JUSTICE”.
At 8:46 a.m., there were reports of the suspect wearing all black, standing near a auto wash next to the convenience store, Edmonson said. An autopsy on the suspect was scheduled for Tuesday.
Businesses around a shooting that killed three law enforcement officers in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, are reopening as police continue investigating the scene. Customers bought coffee and breakfast sandwiches at a B-Quik convenience store. He had worked a night shift and was preparing to go on vacation on Monday.
Businesses at the scene of the gunbattle were scarred with at least eight apparent bullet marks. Investigators examined a hole in a window at a fitness-supply business, and wood covered another window that was shot out. Police said the shooter, 25-year-old Micah Xavier Johnson, an Army veteran, had planned a wider assault on the city. Three other officers were wounded. Not to respond alone to calls that require a two minimum multiple officer response and continue to staff two officers in a auto until further notice.
“An attack on one of us is an attack on all of us”, Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards said Sunday. “When people you know begin to question your integrity you realize they don’t know you at all”, he wrote. “And all of us are again heartbroken at the news of yet another tragedy”.
She invoked a Facebook post by slain officer Montrell Jackson.
State police say the gunman in the Baton Rouge shooting ambushed the six law enforcement officers and “certainly was seeking out police”.
“Multiple officers from both agencies sustained injuries and were transported to local hospitals”, a police official said in an email.
Three other officers were wounded Sunday, one critically.
The gunman killed Montrell Jackson, 32, who had served for a decade on the force, Matthew Gerald, 41, who was new to the Baton Rouge force, having served for less than a year, and Brad Garafola, 45, who had been a cop for 24 years.
Edmonson says: “His movements, his direction, his attention was on police officers”. Jackson had posted a diatribe on the increasing violence and threats brought against police officers following the Dallas police shootings, which left seven officers dead.
Louisiana State Police have positively identified the shooter who killed three law enforcement officers in Baton Rouge as Gavin Long.
“I just want to say God bless these killers”. Tensions have been high since Alton Sterling was shot and killed as two Baton Rouge police officers tried to take him into custody earlier this month.

Sunday’s shooting was almost two weeks after officers shot and killed a black man outside a convenience store. They did not discuss the gunman’s motive or any relationship to the wider police conflicts.
