The match got off to a surprising start when Cheikhou Kouyate drove past Yaya Toure down the left and saw his cross deflect off Fabian Delph before falling perfectly at the feet of Valencia, who drilled his shot past Joe Hart from 12 yards.

Aguero however assured that he would do everything possible to avoid further setbacks.

But moments later Agureo did haul the visitors level after he had been tripped in the area by Carl Jenkinson, coolly sending Adrian the wrong way from the penalty spot. New signing Sam Byram may also feature to make his debut in the middle of the park at Upton Park. A draw was a fair result; a West Ham win would not have been unfair. “I had to move my feet quickly”.

However, Fernando could not stop the inept defending on set pieces and West Ham twice had great chance to grab all three points late on from dead ball situations.

West Ham’s Cheikhow Kouyate hit the crossbar in stoppage time and Clichy has admitted that his team need to do more if they are to compete for the title. West Ham have made a habit of winning even when they don’t have a lot of chances, so City will have to be clinical in taking their chances. Dimitri Payet, strangely muted last week against Newcastle, will be looking to rise to this grandstand occasion. The Sky Blues received a boost last weekend with both Arsenal and Leicester City dropping points to Stoke and Aston Villa respectively. Aguero bailed them out, though. The Frenchman is West Ham’s key man whenever he steps on the pitch.

“Of course, we were not very concentrated”, Pellegrini said of the second goal.

“I don’t think our team is just Sergio Aguero”, said Pellegrini.

Pellegrini is keen to see the attacking football from his side continue, and said: “We must try to arrive as soon as we can at the top of the table. If that happens, and it may happen, then we are going to try and get one striker”, the manager said.

“It was a hard game, I was not very happy with the way we conceded the second goal because it was a throw-in”.

“I started the previous game against Arsenal when I felt a slight pain in my knee, and I was told, “That’s it, you’re coming off”.
