Slaying of infamous ‘San Quentin 6’ member triggers massive 70-inmate riot at

At least one inmate has been killed during a riot at Folsom prison Wednesday afternoon. Some inmates are being treated at the prison’s on-site medical unit.

Officials identified the inmate killed as Hugo Pinell, 71, who had been in custody since 1965. Inmates reportedly had weapons during the riot.

At approximately 12:55 p.m., about 100 inmates began fighting in the exercise yards at California State Prison, Sacramento also known as the new Folson Prison. The cause of the riot is now under investigation.

Eleven other inmates were taken to an outside hospital to be treated for stab wounds.

About a year earlier, nine inmates were taken to a hospital with stab and gunshot wounds as well as blunt force trauma after 50 inmates rioted.

The name of the dead inmate has not been released.

Pinell was initially sent to prison in 1965 to serve a life sentence for a San Francisco rape. According to the CDCR, Pinell killed Correctional Officer R.J. McCarthey on March 3, 1971 at the Correctional Training Facility in Soledad.

Built adjacent to the historic Folsom State Prison, made famous in a Johnny Cash country song, California State Prison-Sacramento is a modern annex that houses about 2,300 inmates, most serving long sentences.

Prisoners remained locked in their cells as officers investigate the disturbance.
