Frank Saunders, chief operational meteorologist at Public Health England, said: “The weather will turn much colder from the north through Friday and for the weekend”.

Flooding and strong winds battered the region earlier this week and now the MET Office say “wintery showers” of rain, sleet and snow and more strong winds are set to hit the North West this weekend.

Meanwhile, the United Kingdom should prepare for a frosty battering from icy winds that could gust at up to 70mph.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: “Please be aware of the likelihood of a few hard driving conditions and possible travel disruption”.

In addition to the colder air and snow, the small but vigorous area of low pressure will bring strong and gusty winds.

“Within this northerly flow, a more organised area of wintry weather and strong to gale force winds is expected to develop near northern Scotland this afternoon, before transferring southwards overnight”.

In fact the most recent snow event was back in 2010 in late November, where snow accumulated across northern and eastern parts of the UK.

Public Health England has sent out an alert about the cold weather as temperatures could plummet below 2C and ice is also a possibility in higher areas.

As if that wasn’t unpleasant enough, the gusts will be accompanied by snow, with a few centimeters predicted over the weekend.

If you thought Storm Barney was bad, prepare yourselves.

“The combination of rain, sleet and snow and dropping temperatures will also lead to a risk of ice in places, particularly over high level routes on Saturday morning”, said a spokesman from the Met Office.

The snow and winds clear by Sunday, leaving a clearer day for many but one that will start with temperatures hovering around zero.

But the western coast will see further showers coming and going throughout the day, many of which will be wintry across higher ground.
