Slick, crisp Arsenal give Wenger faith in a title tilt

Granit Xhaka’s screamer in stoppage time was the icing on the cake for the Gunners, downing 10-man Hull City 4-1.

“It was a good three points”, the defensive midfielder said.

While Arsenal continued to fix the damage inflicted by their two-game no-show at the outset of the campaign with a comfortable victory at the KCOM Stadium, Pep Guardiola’s league leaders racked-up an eighth consecutive victory in all competitions, to underline their status as this season’s eminent force in English football. The north Londoners were far from convincing in a midweek Champions League draw at Paris St Germain, just days after fortuitously overcoming Southampton, but matters were far more comprehensive at the KCOM Stadium.

“We had a very hard game against Southampton last week, went away to Paris St Germain”. Hernandez hit an acrobatic effort off the crossbar, unaware offside had been called, as Hull attempted to reduce the deficit – which they managed to do in the 79th minute after debutant Dieumerci Mbokani was taken down by Petr Cech.

“We started well, we were quite dominant, our game was fluent”. When Sanchez plays up front, he likes to come to the ball.

While his side was comfortably outclassed, interim manager Mike Phelan has done enough in his short time to prove he is the right man for the job. The 20-year-old has such attacking promise – he intelligently occupies space, actively attempts to get involved, and was heavily involved in Arsenal’s transition to goal.

The former Manchester United assistant has been in charge for nearly two months since the departure of Steve Bruce, and he said: “My future is a lot brighter, I think”. The positivity comes from us, from our attitude. Arsenal reportedly received offers from Juventus over the course of the summer for Alexis, but rejected them in order to keep hold of our star player. Arsenal’s problems from the penalty spot continued as Sanchez missed the second of the four they’ve been awarded this season after Hull defender Jake Livermore was ordered off shortly before half-time for handball.

The interim manager has now been offered a deal to become Steve Bruce’s full-time successor and will speak with his family about the deal on Sunday before meeting vice-chairman Ehab Allam on Monday.

Sanchez’s current contract runs out in June 2018 and Wenger is desperate to give him a new deal.

“Due to this game being so quickly upon us, I decided just to leave that alone and we’ll have a little read of it and see where we are going with it and discuss it with the family, hopefully take this club on”.
