Small Business Saturday gives local shops a boost

In between the hysteria that is Black Friday and Cyber Monday, there’s Small Business Saturday.

American Express founded Small Business Saturday six years ago.

A lot of people were out Christmas shopping while also supporting their local businesses.

Businesses on Central Avenue celebrated with free gifts and Shop Small bags for customers. Now W.O.W. Meow Inc. sells books and artwork to the community.

After the hustle and bustle of Thanksgiving and Black Friday shopping at big box stores, local businesses in Michiana had a chance to shine on Small Business Saturday. The store has given away 2,000 books since August.

While local businesses would rather consumers shop small, Hinthorn says they don’t discriminate against those who can’t break the chain.

“You’ll find unique things, things that I’ve picked out personally”.

This weekend marked Small Business Saturday, a day when shoppers are encouraged to support mom-and-pop shops. “You’re putting money into the neighbor next door to the kids you play basketball with”.

Local businesses create jobs, boost the economy, and preserve neighborhoods around the country. “It’s a struggle to stay in business if people don’t shop local”, said Kraus.

“Shopping small is very important to any community”. At the Kidzone Store they’re offering a 50% off sale.

“I think it’s fantastic, and quite honestly being here today it’s been a community”, said one shopper.

“Most companies, they’ll send things off to get worked on”. Sponsors say last year, consumers spent 14.3 billion dollars nationwide, up two percent from the year before.
