Smart Menstrual Cup Can Tell If Your Period Is Unhealthy

I like to think I’m not squeamish about menstruation. “Right now, it’s quite hard to keep track of increases or decreases in fluid volume, and we believe providing women the tools to better monitor and understand their changing menstruation will be highly beneficial for disease, hormonal and other body change detection”. Whereas pads and tampons can contain chemicals and have risks like Toxic Shock Syndrome attached, the Looncup is actually hypoallergenic, latex free, and has zero toxins. Looncup is safe, convenient and so smart, with a securely embedded sensor that talks to your smartphone, ” the Kickstarter page reads.

Menstrual cups have existed for years in a variety of brands: the Mooncup, Diva Cup and Lunette, to name a few. Using information collected over time, it can then send the user a message to remind when their period is coming up.

Many apps are already available that do the same, but this claims to offer even more stats on your flow by, for example, alerting you via Bluetooth whenever your cup is full. It’s a good option for those that want to be more environmentally friendly, or if you just plain hate using tampons and pads.

Lee says this is because Loon Labs (which is based in San Francisco, with a research and development office in Seoul) wanted to make the Looncup in one piece for hygiene reasons, but will explore wireless battery charging for future versions and a new placement for the antenna so the handle is optional.

The cup comes with an app which also lets women know when their period is due.

Whether or not Looncup can achieve its own stated goal of helping women better understand their own periods is also up for debate. After Looncups are sent to Kickstarter supporters (its estimated ship date is January 2016), the startup will open an online store with worldwide shipping.
