Smartphone market improves to 15.5% annual growth in Q3

Continued demand for affordable smart phones in emerging markets drove worldwide sales of smartphones in the third quarter of 2015, according to Gartner.

While smartphone sales in emerging markets rose to 259.7 million in the third quarter of 2015, representing an 18.4% growth over the third quarter of 2014, sales in mature markets saw an increase of just 8.2% over the same period.

The sales were up by 3.7 per cent during the third quarter of 2015 from the same period in 2014, the firm said. In terms of total sales volumes, Apple has about 14.5 percent of marketshare and continues to have a 94 percent share of the total profits of the Smartphone industry.

Pushed on by its latest iPhone 6S and 6S Plus devices, Apple increased its market share from 12.5 percent previous year to 13.1 percent, but still trails Samsung, the market leader, which recorded a 23.7 percent share.

Chinese handset maker Huawei sold 27.26 million smartphones in the reported quarter of 2015 compared to 15.93 million smartphones it sold a year ago.

Driven by progress in rising markets, worldwide mobile telephone shipments in July-September 2015 reached 478 million models and Indian model Micromax was amongst top 10 handset distributors, analysis agency Gartner has stated.

In second place, Apple’s market share grew slightly during the same period, propelled by strong sales of its bigger screened iPhones.

Google’s rival Android platform gained 1.4% points in share year-over-year thanks to strong smartphone global sales from Samsung and Huawei. “Microsoft smartphones will mainly focus on driving value for enterprise users”. Windows Phone and Blackberry have been nearly totally abandoned as their respective market shares were a tiny 1.7 per cent (down by 1.3 pp) and 0.3 per cent (down by 0.5 pp).

Microsoft was adopted by Huawei, LG Electronics, Lenovo, Xiaomi, TCL Communications and ZTE in phrases of unit gross sales in July-September 2015 interval.
