Samsung has revealed the latest incarnation of its highly popular Galaxy phone.

Leaked images of the phone’s specs suggest that the Galaxy S7’s main camera will have a 12.2-megapixel sensor – which is much lower than the 16-megapixel camera on the Galaxy S6.

LG is also making a 360-degree camera and a spherical robot camera that resembles the BB-8 droid in the new “Star Wars” movie.

Samsung and LG’s bids to sell more smartphones by creating a VR ecosystem come as smartphones sales no longer stand as the dominant cash cow of the electronics giants, especially due to the narrowed technology gap with Chinese players and the market’s saturation.

South Korean multinational conglomerate corporation Samsung’s Mobile Comunications Business chief DJ Koh (R) shakes hands with chairman, chief executive, and co-founder of the social networking website Facebook Mark Zuckerberg during a press conference presenting the company’s new Galaxy S7 mobile device, on the eve of the official opening of the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on February 21, 2016.

The phone has a sleek, curvy metal body and comes with a 5.3-inch display. At Samsung’s Unpacked event, he extolled the impending proliferation of VR. LG’s model has constructed-in, lighter shows in the headset’s eyepieces.

LG, meanwhile, designed the LG 360 VR headset to work with an LG smartphone that’s attached by a cable.

The foldable design makes the LG 360 VR easy to carry and aid in watching VR content on-the-go. It allows users to control drones and other smart devices. “The LG G5 is not only device we’d like to introduce today”.

On Sunday night, LG threw out a big challenge to Samsung with a lighter and cooler looking VR headset and a range of devices, including an DSLR camera attachment. “That’s how we worked with Samsung to develop the Gear VR”.

Meanwhile, Facebook announced a new partnership with Samsung created to promote the use of virtual reality on the social network. Samsung and Facebook have partnered to offer affordable VR wearables and experiences.

Other industry watchers cautioned it is too early to say that the VR segment will be a lifesaver for Samsung and LG, adding that it’s just one of many possibilities that can revitalize the saturated handset market.
