Smartwatch market crashes as Apple Watch sales fall 55 percent

Whether the Apple Watch 2 can redeem the reduced sales of the original Apple Watch remains to be unknown; though, some might be looking forward that Apple’s second-generation smartwatch could make a difference.

According to market intelligence company International Data Corporation (IDC) (via Market Watch), the first-generation Apple Watch declined by 55 percent, with initial sales of 3.6 million units during the first three months going down to 1.6 million units during the final quarter.

By contrast, Samsung’s smartwatch sales rose 51% to 0.6m, giving the South Korean firm 16% market share, while Lenovo’s Motorola brand achieved impressive growth of 75% over the year. While that’s great news for Samsung’s market share, the company is not selling almost as many of its products as the company would like.

Despite all this, Apple maintains a large lead in terms of market share, with a 47% chunk of the proverbial pie.

It was revealed by a known tech spectator and senior research analyst, Jitesh Ubrain that the consumers all over the world have become less interested in purchasing the Apple Watch since early 2016, as reported by Yibada.

Industry insiders are speculating that this decline could have something to do with the Apple Watch 2 release date. That said, as The Inquirer points out, things may pick up again later on this year, as Apple is now expected to announce the Apple Watch 2 alongside the iPhone 7 in September this year. However, none of those companies shipped over one million watches. As per the the publication’s sources, the forthcoming wearable is set to launch together with the forthcoming iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. And while the Apple Watch definitely made its mark and quickly became the most popular smartwatch out there, the market as a whole never really took off.

Apple first the Apple Watch to the public in September 2014, and since then the device has captured the interest of many users. If Apple can work out Wi-Fi connectivity independent of the iPhone and increase its battery life all may well be forgiven, but anything less will be viewed as a failure given the wait.
