‘Smash and grab’ robbery sparks California mall lockdown

According to the Riverside Police Department, the robbery took place around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday at Ben Bridge Jewelers located inside the Galleria at Tyler.

We are receiving reports of a heavy police presence at Tyler Mall in Riverside.

Witnesses told the Riverside Press-Enterprise (http://bit.ly/21IlzFb ) they saw people running and screaming as dozens of officers stormed into the mall.

Several mall employees said they closed their stores and helped their customers hide until police evacuated them from the mall.

The mall was temporarily locked down based on initial reports of a shooting at the site.

There are now more than sixty units on their way to the mall off Tyler Street.

Shoppers and workers were panicked at a Riverside mall as officers launched a massive manhunt for robbers with axes.

The quick and overwhelming police response unfolded with Inland residents on edge after last week’s terror attack in San Bernardino that left 14 people dead and 21 wounded.

The married couple behind the massacre, Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik, lived in Riverside.

Police had no information on the three male suspects.

San Bernardino police were also deployed to city malls and theaters in this city as a precaution during the Riverside response, Burguan said.
