Smithers From ‘The Simpsons’ Is Finally Coming Out As Gay

“We deal with that in two episodes”, said the showrunner.

Smithers’ episode will function a little differently, though, because Patty’s sexuality was a minor surprise; we already know what Smithers does in his free time. Hopefully this means love is in store for our favorite nuclear power plant employee (sorry Carl).

Smithers’ sexuality has been a long-running gag on the show, especially his secret unrequited love for his elderly boss.

“The Simpsons” showrunner Al Jean suggests this just may be the year that Smithers comes out to Mr. Burns.

According to The Simpsons wiki page, Springfield is home to several gay characters – like those who work at the Ajax Steel Mill, which turns into a gay nightclub at night. Jean himself was once among them: “I’ve always thought of Smithers as a Burns-osexual”.

Smithers replies: “If you did it, sir?”

Fortunately, he had a change of heart by July and is now returning for the 27th and 28th seasons of the Fox network show. Losing Shearer would have a big impact on the show, as he does not only voice Smithers. Another character who came out as gay in 2008 is Duffman.

In an interview with TV Line, executive producer Al Jean talked about the new season of “The Simpsons” and what fans should expect.

Elsewhere in the new series, Apu will fall out with his brother Sanjay, resulting in Sanjay’s nephew Jamshed taking over the Kwik-E-Mart.
