For 26 seasons, one of the most beloved characters on “The Simpsons” has shared a secret with viewers while keeping many of his fellow Springfield residents in the dark.

Speaking to TV Line, “The Simpson’s” executive producer Al Jean said, “In Springfield now, most people know he’s gay, but obviously Burns doesn’t”.

While Mr Burns cares about Smithers and has even plans for a special coffin that will see the pair buried together, it is not know if he feels the same way.

Over the 27 seasons, Smithers’ sexuality has hardly been a thing of subtlelty and it’s only Monty Burns who’s been oblivious.

What do you think of Mr. Smithers coming out?

Although some may wonder what the big deal is, the plotline will definitely mark a sea-change for “The Simpsons“.

The news comes after another awkward predicament, this time for the show’s producers, after Harry Shearer – who voices a number of the characters, including Smithers and Burns – quit the animated series in May.

The population of Springfield is well aware that Smithers is homosexual but boss Mr Burns (also voiced by Shearer) remains totally oblivious to his employee’s feelings for him.

The Simpsons is now shown in Australia on Foxtel and repeated regularly on Eleven.

Season 27 premiered in the USA last night.

On Marge going to jail in the season finale Orange is the New Yellow: “Marge lets Bart go to the park alone because he’s too irritating, then she ends up getting arrested”.

Another revelation is Apu’s nephew, Jamshed, taking over the Kwik-E-Mart because of Apu’s rocky relationship with his brother Sanjay.
