Jolley said fire was contained to a downstairs bedroom, and the body of a man, believed to be a family acquaintance, was discovered after the fire was extinguished.

One person is dead and two others are being treated for injuries after a fire in the 191-hundred block of Mitchell Road in Pitt Meadows overnight.

Neighbours said a woman, her children and her parents lived in the home.

The smoke was so thick in the house, said Jolley, that firefighters had a hard time accessing the bedroom because of the zero visibility.

“Fire crews did an outstanding job containing the fire to that room”, Jolley said.

Ridge Meadows RCMP remained at the home through the night.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation but Jolley said while the house had smoke detectors, they were not working.
