Snapchat debuts recording ‘Spectacles,’ changes company name

Business Insider says the glasses record up to 10 seconds of footage at a time – so the same as Snapchat now does.

The glasses are the first hardware from the Los Angeles-based company.

Social media app Snapchat is introducing video-recording glasses called Spectacles and is changing its company name to incorporate the new product.

While everybody is wondering how the sunglasses work, here’s what you need to know.

After Business Insider obtained and published a video of the glasses in action, Snap officially announced the news in The Wall Street Journal.

Evan Spiegel, the chief executive officer and co-founder of Snap, has been testing a prototype of the glasses since at least early 2015. According to the company, the wearable will transmit recordings directly to the user’s phone using wireless technology. The reason for the name change has to do with the idea that the company is comprised of more than just the app.

The Spectacles will cost 9.99 and will be available in three colors ― black, teal, and coral. Pressing a button near the hinge will record 10-seconds of video from the wearer’s point-of-view. Spectacles will also be “capable of taking a day’s worth of snaps on a single charge”, wrote the company in a blog post.

The company – which is changing its name to Snap, Inc. – will start selling hardware now in addition to the software they created with their wildly popular picture and video messaging app!

Then, you can connect it to a smart phone and share with friends on Snapchat!

Spectacles will be available this Fall, in limited quantities and will cost $130, the company told us.

Snap’s Spectacles have already drawn many comparisons to Glass, Google’s head-mounted computer that was unveiled in 2013 to much fanfare. It’s a device that isn’t meant to be worn all the time and instead, something you save for a birthday party or a music festival.
