Snapchat gets a re-brand with launch of Spectacles camera-sunglasses

Following the footsteps of search engine giant Google, the Social media app, Snapchat, now known as Snap Inc, has released its own video-recording glasses called “Spectacles”. The specs will feature an integrated video camera with a 115-degree lens created to match human visual perspective. Spectacles will be sunglasses with a video camera that allows you to create Memories.

Sources close to the company say CEO Evan Spiegel and cofounder Bobby Murphy have been closely involved in making the glasses with a small, top-secret team known internally as Snap Labs. Snap posted a promotional video for Spectacles on YouTube and is expected to show off the gadget in NY this week.

Spectacles will go on sale for $129.99, but the distribution will be limited (at least initially). “Now that we are developing other products, like Spectacles, we need a name that goes beyond just one product”, he wrote in a blog post.

The video captured by the glasses is then wirelessly sent to the Memories section of the Snapchat app, Business Insider explains.

“Imagine one of your favorite memories”, the announcement on the company’s website reads.

Spectacles are similar to Google’s Glass, in that both have a camera, but Snap’s offering can do just two things: take short videos and keep the sun out of your eyes. It’s one thing to see images of an experience you had, but it’s another thing to have an experience of the experience. “That’s why we built Spectacles”.

Videos recorded by Spectacles will appear in on Snapchat as a “circular video format” which anyone can watch no matter the device or orientation their phone is in.

According to CNN Money, the $130 dollar sunglasses’ camera has a 115 degree field of view and is located near the left eye. The Wall Street Journal reports they’ll be out this fall. We can’t wait for you to see it!
