Snapchat Is Going To Introduce Spectacles Very Soon

Along with the launch, the company has renamed itself Snap Inc., Business Insider reports. “Now that we are developing other products, like Spectacles, we need a name that goes beyond just one product – but doesn’t lose the familiarity and fun of our team and brand”, said the 26-year-old CEO in an official blog post.

Spectacles will be available in black, teal or coral and look much more like ordinary sunglasses than previous innovations like Google Glass.

The videos recorded by the Spectacles will be registered in a circular format and similar to a Go-Pro cam, allowing the user to move freely and add the picture or their video to the “Memories” section on Snapchat.

The footage will be transferred to your phone via Bluetooth; for higher resolutions you can also transfer your files over Wi-Fi.

You’ve got to admit, they’re better looking than Google Glass. “It was unbelievable, it’s one thing to see images of an experience you had, but it’s another to have an experience of the experience”, explained Siegel to the Wall Street Journal.

“Circular video plays full screen on any device, in any orientation, and captures the human perspective with a 115-degree field of view”.

As for pricing and availability, Snap said the sunglasses will be produced in small quantities and are priced at US$130 (S$180). You can only record video up to 30 seconds long however. If you don’t have your phone on you, the videos will be temporarily stored on the glasses.

According to Snap Inc.

However, this Snapchat Update does not say when the device will be made available for purchase or pre-order, even the price is yet to be made.

As Snap CEO Evan Spiegel told WSJ, the rectangle format is a vestige of when we printed photos on paper, and isn’t necessary anymore.
