Snedeker leads amateur in Canadian Open

Thanks to a round of 6-under 66, Brandt Snedeker will take a one-shot lead over world No. 2 Dustin Johnson and Canadian amateur Jared du Toit into the final round of the RBC Canadian Open.

Du Toit, battling a wayward tee game to go with the expected nerves, still managed to shoot a one-under-par round of 71 to finish tied for ninth at nine under. Broadhurst, 50, overcame an opening 75 to become the third English player to win a senior major, joining Mark James and Roger Chapman.

Sponsor invite and top-ranked Canadian amateur Jared du Toit pieced together a 1-under-par 36-35=71 in the final round of the RBC Canadian Open to settle into a four-way T9 on 9-under 279, three strokes back of champion Jhonattan Vegas. Friday, he rebounded from a triple-bogey and bogey with three straight birdies.

The atmosphere he spoke of included the fans around the 18th hole serenading him with an impromptu rendition of O Canada after he slammed in an eagle putt from 40 feet.

“I think I’m going to be the most hated man in Canada (Sunday) but it’s going to be a lot of fun trying to figure it out”. “It hasn’t set in so far, but I’m loving every minute of it. I’m here having fun and trying to go play golf”.

A Canadian hasn’t won the national golf championship since 1954, when Pat Fletcher accomplished the feat at Vancouver’s Point Grey Golf Club. Carl Keffer is the only Canadian-born champion, winning in 1909 and 1914.

“Yeah, really just I felt good about it, just thinking about what I did yesterday”, said Day, who is now in a share of 28th.

“I had a six-shot lead going into the weekend and lost by three”, Vegas said. I just have to pull on my experience tomorrow and play well again.

Defending champion Mark Mulder and Mike Modano were tied for third at 45. He dodged a number of challengers who failed to come up with the necessary birdie or eagle on the par-5 18th to catch Vegas.

Dustin Johnson, the world’s second-ranked player, made a late charge with an eagle on 16 and a birdie on 18, but he was forced to settle for a tie for second at 11 under with super rookie Jon Rahm and Martin Laird.

“Tomorrow, I feel like I’m playing pretty well, swinging the ball well”, Johnson said.

The Americans finished the four-day event with 13 points – one more than South Korea and two better than England and Taiwan. He’s close to being out of exemptions for this year and just hasn’t figured out how to bring his major championship form – T21 and T15 in two majors this year – to the regular Tour events.

Adam Hadwin (71) of Abbotsford, B.C., tied for 49th at 1 under, amateur Garrett Rank (76) of Elmira, Ont., was in a group tied at 77th 8 over and Corey Conners (78) of Listowel, Ont., finished at 12 over in 80th.
