Snow, ice expected Monday

Coyle said there could be anywhere from a coating to 2 inches of snow in the Midstate, which means there will be enough to create slippery travel for the Monday evening commute.

The changing precipitation is expected to make traveling treacherous. Partly sunny, with a high near 46. Wind chill values as low as -13.

Sunday Night: Increasing clouds, with a low around 14. Two to 4 inches of snow is possible, along with a tenth of an inch of ice.

In all, more than 85 million people from the Midwest to the Eastern Seaboard are expected to get walloped by snow and freezing rain into Tuesday. Meteorologists predicted 3 and 6 inches of snow from North Carolina to the Maine-Canada border. Chance of precipitation is 100%.

Suspected tornados touched down in Florida’s Panhandle and MS on Monday, destroying more than a dozen homes, damaging a school while it was in session and trapping an elderly woman and possibly other residents in rubble. A total daytime snow and sleet accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible, according to the National Weather Service. If the freezing rain and ice accumulations shift a little earlier into Monday, or a little later into Tuesday, even more impact is likely.

Southeast winds of 10 to 20 miles per hour could cause visibilities to be less than a quarter-mile at times. It is one of my least favorite types of weather, due to its potential hassle and the difficulty in forecasting it.

Generally a half to 1 inch of rain is expected overnight Monday into Tuesday. Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly clear, with a low around 35. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Wednesday Night: A 30 percent chance of snow showers before 1am.

Friday: Partly sunny, with a high near 43.

On Sunday, the winds will begin decreasing, but temperatures will only be in the single digits during the morning and rising into the teens by Sunday night.
