The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Lebanon and surrounding counties from 2 p.m. Monday to 1 a.m. Tuesday.
In most of northern New Jersey, along with the Lehigh Valley and Berks County in eastern Pennsylvania, the weather service expects “a prolonged period of freezing rain”, as the changeover to all rain will not occur until late tonight. This transition from snow to freezing rain and sleet will continue advance northward through the evening hours. One of the apparent twisters swept through the rural town of Century, in the northwest corner of Florida’s Panhandle, late Monday afternoon, destroying or significantly damaging about 10 homes, said Escambia County spokeswoman Joy Tsubooka.
The boiler stopped working early Monday morning, prompting Peabody fire officials to repond for the third time in 24 hours to the hospital, which specializes in long-term critical care.
The tornadoes were part of a large winter storm system accompanied by rain, strong winds, snow and sleet. Up to 1 inch of snow, with a glaze of ice, is expected.
The morning drive on Tuesday will be foggy and drizzly.
Fox 61 meteorologist Dan Amarante said the minus 11 degrees recorded at Bradley Sunday morning surpassed the previous low of minus 9 set in 1979. Some mountainous areas such as in North Carolina could get even more snow. Total daytime snow and sleet accumulation of 4 to 8 inches possible.
Icy rain and snow mixes are set to pound the Northeast and mid-Atlantic after spreading aross the Midwest. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.
Tuesday, rain will continue, but temperatures will be warmer, with a high near 56, the weather service predicts.
At least three deaths were reported on slick roads, all in Virginia, and thousands were left without power from weather-caused outages.
The high Tuesday will be around 55 degrees in Springfield and Worcester, 57 in Boston, 50 in Pittsfield. Throughout the day, temperatures are anticipated to rise along with heavy rainfall causing localized flooding.
