The 31-year-old Vonn, already sporting a brace on her right knee to protect one of a succession of older injuries, had fluid drained from her left knee before deciding to start today’s event.
Switzerland’s Lara Gut reacts at finish line after making a mistake and going out during an alpine ski, women’s World Cup, combined race, in Soldeu, Andorra, Sunday, Feb. 28, 2016.
The American also retained her lead over Gut in the super-G discipline standings, 420-356 points.
Italian Federica Brignone won Saturday’s super-G, with American Laurenne Ross taking second, matching her best career World Cup finish. “On the bottom part I was really fast”.
“I first thought I would give it all and risk everything”, she said.
“Now I will talk to my trainers and make a plan”. The French woman knew after yesterday’s race she could sign a great performance in the first run of the Super Combined, in order to be well placed for the slalom. “Until then, you just have to race”, said Gut, who scored just 15 points in Saturday’s race.
Organisers had pushed the start of the event back by 90 minutes to allow fresh snow to be moved off the course.
Wendy Holdener was runner-up as a result of the quickest slalom run of 45.60secs which left her 0.20secs back from Gagnon over the two runs, while Anne-Sophie Barthet completed the podium. “I was hoping for a podium because I knew I would have a good chance here”.
The super-G was the first ever speed event in Andorra, which hosted slalom and GS events before.
