Snubs and surprises from the 2016 Golden Globe nominations
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which bestows the Golden Globes, exhibited a lack of sentiment for AMC’s “Mad Men”, which completed its stellar run last season. It got nominations for best comedy picture.

Veteran actress Charlotte Rampling has been a big part of the best actress conversation for her work in the affecting marital drama “45 Years”, but was locked out of the best actress, drama category, possibly because Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchett were both nominated as leads in “Carol”. Hulu, the ABC-NBC-Fox joint-owned online video venture, landed a best comedy series nomination for its modern dating show “Casual”.
Idris Elba earned a best supporting actor nomination for his searing turn as the leader of a group of child soldier rebels.
TV surprises: The addictive and romantic “Outlander” series shocked with a drama nod, and earned one for lead actress Caitriona Balfe.
It also made a breakthrough with this week’s Screen Actors Guild (SAG) nominations, earning 10 nods and again overtaking HBO for the first time in a top awards context.
Steven Spielberg’s well-regarded Cold War thriller “Bridge of Spies” received only one nomination for Mark Rylance’s supporting performance as a Soviet spy.
For best actor in a drama, the nominees are Cranston, Redmayne, Leonardo DiCaprio for “The Revenant”, Michael Fassbender for “Steve Jobs” and Will Smith for “Concussion”, a story about a pathologist who diagnosed degenerative brain disease in American football players.
Timothy Gray, awards editor at industry magazine Variety, said the nominations reflected the cross-section of films in the running for this year’s prizes. It was nominated for best picture, comedy, actor (Matt Damon) and director (Ridley Scott).
Alicia Vikander, best actress nominee for “The Danish Girl” and best supporting actress nominee for “Ex Machina”: “To be considered amongst all these brilliant actresses and their outstanding performances is such an honour”.
Brie Larson, best actress nominee for “Room”: “Wow”.
Steve Carrell- Nominee for Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy “The Big Short”: “Thank you Hollywood Foreign Press”.
Tied with “The Big Short”, with four nominations was the follow up to “Birdman”, “The Revenant”, by Alejandro Inarritu.
Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) scored more Golden Globe nominations this year than any other TV network, snagging eight nominations for its original shows like “Orange is the New Black” and “Narcos”.
All three major streaming services-Amazon, Hulu and Netflix-were recognized among the list of nominees announced Thursday morning with 14 total nominations.
Out of Netflix’s three nominated shows, Orange is the New Black and Narcos rounded up two nominations per program, while the dramas House of Cards and Bloodline and the comedies Master of None and Grace and Frankie each received one.
