Larsen earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Northern Iowa in 1990 and received her law degree from Northwestern University School of Law in 1993, ranking first in her class.

Kelly announced in August she was stepping down with more than three years left in her eight-year term, to return to private law practice.

“She was deputy assistant attorney general in the U.S. Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel”.

“I’m looking forward to joining the court and starting a new chapter in my legal career as we wrestle with a few of the most important legal issues facing the state”, Larsen said during a press conference inside the governor’s office building in downtown Lansing. “I read about them in the newspapers, just like you did”, she said. Four of the other justices are Republican nominees, while two were nominated by Democrats. She will also be eligible to run in 2018 for a full 8-year term.

“The appointment of Joan Larsen to the Michigan Supreme Court ensures that we will have another rule-of-law justice on the bench”.

And Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette also sang her praises.
